CHAPTER 17

THE TRUTH WAITS

OH, I have finally found true happiness. This is what it means to truly be alive! I had to come all of the way north to find it, but I have finally found happiness.

Before Darach had left to deal with castle business, he had sent down for more proper clothes.

“Clothes befitting a lady,” he had said.

He had also shown Margery where she could wash up, ordering fresh hot water for her to do so. When he had left the room, Margery had bathed herself and put on a fresh smock, this one as white as milk, and not ragged like the one that she had entered the room in. Margery was sure that the undergarment was crafted from silk, much like the ones she was used to wearing back home. When she was back under the sheets, she felt that she was home again.

This does feel like it did when I was at Lashentire Mansion, but it feels more at home here, if that is possible. I never want to leave this place, though I know that I will have to at some point. I must find out the truth.

“When can we leave here?” That was the first question that Margery asked when Darach returned to her for the night.

“Sick of me already?” asked Darach.

“Of course not,” replied Margery. “I only want to return here. You promised me that we would go to Northumberland together, and find out the truth about Mr. Paverton. I only want to leave and find the truth so that we can return here sooner and really be together. While my father is still under the spell of that man, I cannot just lie here and do nothing.”

“Well, ye dinnae have tae just lie there and dae nothin’,” said Darach. “I hae some ideas as tae what we can dae.”

“I try to talk about serious matters, and all that you can do is joke,” said Margery.

“Then why are ye smilin’ and thinkin’ about what we can dae?” asked Darach.

“Because you are a handsome rogue,” said Margery. “A man that I cannot stop thinking about, even if I do want to at times, especially after you say things like that.”

“Talkin’ of serious business,” said Darach, “we have some hard times here at the castle right now.”

“Can you not leave matters in the hands of Balgair?” Margery asked.

“I can and I will,” said Darach. “But, not just yet. There are too many problems and I need tae be here tae look after them. As soon as it’s figured out, we will ride south.”

“You look troubled,” said Margery. “Come, sit down and share with me.”

“I dinnae know if ye can help,” said Darach. “Ye dinnae hae the experience with castles.”

“That is beside the point,” said Margery. “Just because you share a problem, it does not mean that I have a solution for it. But, a problem shared is a problem halved. Come on, sit down and talk with me, you might just find that it helps after all.
